W.O.S. Newey 1929-2017

28 October 2017

Dudley Rifle Club announces with deep sadness, the loss of its President W.O.S. (Bill) Newey, at the age of 88.

After National Service with the Royal Navy, aboard HMS Implacable, he married in 1952 and joined the club the following year. By the late fifties he was well entrenched as Hon.Sec. and a keen pistol shot. The club had been founded in 1944 from the Home Guard and was using its original 25yard indoor range.

Ten years later, having clearly seen the need to satisfy a growing membership for the club’s several outdoor and indoor disciplines, Bill led a like-minded nucleus on a determined path to raise the funding and then to build new facilities to our own design. His competence as a skilled electrician was put to full use during this period.
He fired the first shot on the new small-bore range in 1973 with a borrowed single shot Webley.

Following his retirement after 33years as Hon.Sec., Bill was honoured to receive a well-deserved Long Service Award from N.S.R.A. and was invited to continue to serve his club as President until his death at the end of March. A committed Christian of many talents, his funeral was attended by more than 200 mourners and all his friends and colleagues at DRC extend their condolences to Joyce, his wife and son Tim in their grief.
